Hello everyone, Cory from Edwards Bros. Reviews here, and today we’re gonna be taking a look at two novelty snack brands: Pringles and Lay’s Stax. Chase and I decided to buy three flavors of each snack and let them duke it out in a Snack Showdown to figure out which curved crisp is superior. So, let’s get started.

Today’s Combatants

Round 1: Original Flavor

The first flavors we tried were each brand’s Original variety. We found that the Lay’s have a much more pronounced potato aftertaste, and more closely resemble an actual potato chip than the Pringles. The Pringles were much lighter and not as crisp as the Lays. Overall, Chase, Austin, and I all felt that the Lay’s Stax Original variety beat out the Pringles, although they are both quality snacks.

LAY’S: 3 PRINGLES: 0

Round 2: BBQ Flavor

Next, we decided to try the BBQ flavors. Chase and I are both not fans of Lay’s BBQ flavor in general, and, sadly for us, the Lay’s Stax use the same BBQ seasoning as their normal potato chips. Lay’s BBQ, we find, is too smoky and overall not very pleasant to eat. The BBQ Pringles had a much less abrasive BBQ flavor with a slight sweetness, which paired well with the lighter texture. All three of us thought Pringles dominated this round.

LAY’S: 3 PRINGLES: 3

Round 3: Sour Cream and Onion

Heading into this round, we thought Lay’s had their work cut out for them. Sour Cream and Onion Pringles are a bonafide classic, so we thought this would be another easy round for the Pringles. However, we were surprised to find that the Lay’s Stax were quite close. The Stax have a much stronger sour cream and onion flavor, whereas the Pringles sour cream and onion is more subtle. Chase felt that the stronger flavor and crispier texture made the Lay’s Stax better. Austin felt that the Lay’s Stax never reached a “peak” with its flavor, whereas the Pringles did. I felt that the Sour Cream and Onion flavor on the Stax was a bit too much, so I also sided with the Pringles, although it was quite close.

LAY’S: 4 PRINGLES: 5

Overall, the Pringles just barely edged out the Lay’s Stax. The Stax, overall, were crunchier and more strongly flavored than the Pringles, which used subtler seasonings and had a lighter texture. This formula gave Lay’s the win for the original flavor, but Pringles had them beat in BBQ and Sour Cream and Onion. I had always viewed Lay’s Stax as a blatant knockoff of Pringles, but after giving them a chance, I can say that the Stax are a pretty good snack.

We also allowed our dog Beulah to participate by letting her choose which crisp she wanted to eat, and she went with the Pringles all three times. Now, to celebrate Pringles’ victory, I’m going to go play the fan-made Sega Genesis Pringles game.

Actually…this may be a bootleg…
